New gTLDs

New gTLD Consulting And Registry Services

Are you Considering Applying for and Operating a New Generic Top-Level Domain? (Sometimes also referred to as .Brand, Brand TLD, Branded Top-Level Domain). ICANN is expected to open the next application round in 2023, but it may come sooner!

ICANN received 1930 applications for 1400 unique strings during the first gTLD application window in 2012. More than 600 applications were for .brand TLDs.

More than 1000 new gTLDs have now launched including .brand TLDs such as .BMW, .EMERCK and .DVAG.

These brands operate and control their own name space and can create as many domain names they wish, such as tv.dvag, next100.bmw or www.magazine.emerck. Consumers will learn that .brand TLDs are safe harbours where only the brand itself can be found.

A high number of .brand TLDs have already become very successful.  It is time to begin to assess and discuss with your colleagues whether your company should apply for and operate your own .brand TLD.

Analysing and deciding whether or not to apply for a .brand TLD takes some effort. This involves competitor analysis, risk assessment, feasibility studies, and a general understanding of the application process and the ICANN world, which you would enter, if you decide to run your own .brand TLD.
